What the Cameroon Cocoa Prices Mean

  • FOB price is the price of cocoa beans loaded on a ship at a Cameroonian port such as Douala or Kribi. International buyers who arrange their own freight compare offers on this basis.
  • CIF price includes sea freight and insurance to the buyer’s port, so it is a little higher than FOB.
  • Exporter buying price in Douala is the range exporters pay for beans delivered to Douala. Farm-gate prices in the growing regions are usually lower, because of collection and transport costs.

How Cocoa Prices Are Set in Cameroon

Cameroon’s cocoa market is liberalised. In other words, prices are agreed freely between farmers, buyers and exporters, rather than fixed by the state for the whole season. ONCC, the National Cocoa and Coffee Board, publishes reference prices every working day. These follow world cocoa markets and help everyone in the chain negotiate with the same information.

World prices move with supply from West Africa, demand from grinders and the exchange rate. For the background to recent price swings, read our article on the cocoa supply shortage.

Converting the Cocoa Price to Euros or Dollars

The CFA franc (FCFA) is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 655.957 FCFA per euro. Therefore, to get the price per tonne in euros, multiply the price per kilogram by 1,000 and divide by 655.957. For US dollars, use the current EUR/USD exchange rate, because that rate changes daily.

Prices for Cocoa Butter, Powder and Other Products

ONCC reference prices cover cocoa beans only. Prices for cocoa butter, cocoa powder, cocoa liquor, cocoa nibs and other processed products depend on the specification, volume and delivery terms. For that reason, BV Cocoa Products quotes them per order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cocoa price in Cameroon today?

The table at the top of this page shows the latest official reference prices published by ONCC: the FOB price, the CIF price and the exporter buying price in Douala, in FCFA per kilogram. It updates automatically when ONCC publishes new prices.

Who sets the cocoa price in Cameroon?

Cameroon’s cocoa market is liberalised, so buyers and sellers agree prices freely. ONCC (Office National du Cacao et du Café) publishes daily reference prices that track world cocoa markets and help farmers, buyers and exporters negotiate.

What is the difference between the FOB and CIF cocoa price?

FOB (Free On Board) is the price with cocoa loaded on the ship at the Cameroonian port. CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) adds sea freight and insurance to the destination port, so it is higher.

How do I convert the FCFA cocoa price to euros?

The CFA franc is pegged to the euro at 655.957 FCFA per euro. Multiply the FCFA per kg price by 1,000 to get the price per tonne, then divide by 655.957.

Does ONCC publish prices for cocoa butter or cocoa powder?

No. ONCC reference prices cover cocoa beans. Prices for cocoa butter, powder, liquor, nibs and other products depend on specification and volume, so exporters quote them per order.
