Current cocoa price in Cameroon

ONCC publishes three main figures. Each one describes the price at a different point in the chain, from the warehouse in Douala to the buyer’s port.

  • Exporter buying price in Douala is what exporters pay for beans delivered to Douala. Farm-gate prices in the growing regions are usually lower, because of collection and transport costs.
  • FOB price is the price of beans loaded on a ship at Douala or Kribi. International buyers compare offers on this basis.
  • CIF price adds sea freight and insurance to the buyer’s port.

How the price of cocoa in Cameroon is set

Cameroon’s cocoa market is liberalised. In other words, the state does not fix one price for the whole season. Instead, farmers, buyers and exporters agree prices freely, and ONCC publishes daily reference prices to give everyone the same information.

Several factors move those prices:

  • World futures. London and New York cocoa futures set the global benchmark. Track them on our international cocoa market prices dashboard.
  • The euro. The CFA franc is pegged to the euro, so the euro price of cocoa feeds straight into FCFA.
  • Quality and grade. Well-fermented, dry beans with a good bean count earn better prices.
  • Season and supply. Prices react to harvest volumes in West Africa, including Cameroon’s main crop in the second half of the year.

What the price means for buyers

For international buyers, the FOB price is the starting point. You then add sea freight, insurance and import costs, or ask for a CIF offer. Because Cameroon prices move with the world market, many contracts are priced against London or New York futures, or against the ICCO daily price, plus or minus a differential for origin and quality.

Converting the Cameroon cocoa price to euros and dollars

The conversion is simple. First, multiply the FCFA per kg price by 1,000 to get the price per tonne. Next, divide by 655.957 to get euros. Finally, multiply by the EUR/USD rate to get US dollars.

For example, 3,362 FCFA per kg equals 3,362,000 FCFA per tonne, or about €5,125 per tonne. At an exchange rate of 1.12, that is roughly US$5,745 per tonne.
