Cocoa Shell Granules and Cocoa Husk: Uses, Specifications and Wholesale Buying

Cocoa shell granules and cocoa bean husk wholesale

Cocoa shell granules are the crushed outer shell of the cocoa bean, separated from the nibs during processing. Once treated as waste, cocoa shell is now a useful by-product for mulch, fuel, animal feed, cosmetics and food fibre. This guide explains the main uses of cocoa shell and cocoa husk, the specifications to request, and how to buy wholesale.

Cocoa Shell, Cocoa Bean Husk and Cocoa Pod Husk

The names can be confusing, so it helps to separate them.

  • Cocoa shell, also called cocoa bean husk, is the thin skin around each bean. It is removed by winnowing. It makes up roughly 10–17% of the bean’s weight.
  • Cocoa shell granules are shells crushed and screened to a set particle size.
  • Cocoa pod husk is the thick outer pod that holds the beans. It stays on the farm and is a different material.

Our cocoa husk page covers the product we export.

Main Uses of Cocoa Shell Granules

Winnowing separates cocoa beans into nibs and shells. The nibs become chocolate, but the shells have many sustainable uses.

  1. Garden mulch and soil improver. Cocoa shell mulch suppresses weeds, holds moisture and adds organic matter. However, it contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs, so retailers label it carefully.
  2. Animal feed. Cocoa shell adds fibre to some feeds. Because of theobromine, it is used only in limited amounts, and EU feed rules restrict theobromine levels.
  3. Biomass fuel. Dry shells burn well. Some processors use them to fire boilers, and shells can be pressed into pellets.
  4. Food ingredients. After cleaning and treatment, cocoa shell can be milled into cocoa fibre, or used in cocoa tea and infusions.
  5. Cosmetics. Fine shell powder is used as a natural exfoliant in scrubs and soaps.
  6. Compost and growing media. Shells break down slowly and improve soil structure.

Specifications to Request for Cocoa Shell

The right specification depends on the end use. For example, a mulch buyer cares about particle size and appearance, while a feed or food buyer needs strict safety data.

Parameter What to agree
Moisture A maximum, often around 10–12%, to prevent mould in transit
Particle size Whole shell, granules (for example a few millimetres) or fine powder
Foreign matter and sand Low limits; ask for ash content as a check
Theobromine Important for feed and garden use
Microbiology Salmonella absent for feed and food uses
Contaminants Heavy metals and pesticide residues for food and feed
Packaging Woven PP bags, jumbo bags or pellets

Shipping Cocoa Shell in Bulk

Cocoa shell is light and bulky. As a result, a container fills up by volume before it reaches its weight limit. Many buyers therefore choose 40-foot high-cube containers, compressed bales or pellets to lower the freight cost per tonne. Ask your supplier for the expected load per container before you compare prices.

How to Buy Cocoa Shell Granules Wholesale

  1. Define the end use, because it decides the specification.
  2. Request a sample to check size, colour and smell.
  3. Agree the documents: COA, certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate.
  4. Confirm the load per container and Incoterms, such as FOB or CIF.
